Michael Boyd Biography

Michael Boyd is a landscape, furniture, and architectural designer based in Los Angeles and San Francisco. He is the principal of BoydDesign, a consultancy for the restoration and preservation of modernist architecture, and for collecting modern art and design. He is an internationally renown and published expert on 20th century design and post-war Modernism. His most notable restorations include Paul Rudolph’s Rudolph Townhouse (1975) in New York City and Oscar Niemeyer’s only North American built work besides the U.N. Complex, the Strick House (1964) in Santa Monica. Boyd curated and designed the installation for the design section of the traveling exhibition Birth of the Cool: California Art, Design, and Culture at Midcentury. He has contributed numerous essays to publications on modernism, including The Migration of Modernism: From Turn-of-the-Century Vienna to Mid-Century Los Angeles for Birth of the Cool (Prestel, 2007), Chasing Modern: Ideal and Object for Modernist Paradise: Niemeyer House/Boyd Collection (Rizzoli, 2007), and R.M. Schindler: Furniture as Micro-Architecture, for RM Schindler: The Gingold Commissions (William Stout Publishers, 2007). Boyd is featured in Collecting Design by Adam Lindeman (Taschen, 2011). Boyd is the founder and designer of PLANEfurniture, a line of architectural furnishings that have been selected for the permanent collections of SFMOMA, The Palm Springs Museum, and the Univesity of California, Santa Barbara (ADC, Architecture and Design Collection, Gebhard Archives). His restoration work and design have been featured in Architectural Digest numerous times and has been on the cover of Elle Décor Italia on multiple occasions. The newly released Thames and Hudson tome, The Iconic Interior: from 1900 to the present, features Boyd’s work on the cover. Boyd serves as an advisor to several museums and institutions regarding modern design and architecture, and 20th-century Decorative Arts, including: LACMA, MoMA, SFMOMA, Orange County Museum of Art, The Wolfsonian, and MaK, Vienna. He regularly lectures and appears on panels for museums and auction houses including Christie’s and Sotheby’s.
